It’s no wonder that so many people choose to have their photos taken in the nation’s capital. Whether you’re looking for the perfect spot for family photos, engagement photos, or maternity photos, today I am excited to share my favorite photo locations around Washington DC.

The Thomas Jefferson Memorial provides a serene and less crowded spot for taking in the city’s sights. Being situated on the opposite side of the Tidal Basin, it allows for easy access to parking lots and avoids the hustle and bustle of tourists. To ensure optimal lighting and minimal crowds, sunrise sessions are recommended, much like the Lincoln Memorial. Additionally, the memorial boasts picturesque waterfront views of the Tidal Basin and the Washington Monument.
To capture still photographs at any location on the National Mall, a $50 permit from the National Park Service is mandatory. A filing fee of $90 is also required, bringing the total cost to $140. However, the application process is straightforward, and I can guide you through it.

The Constitution Gardens, situated close to the Lincoln Memorial, is a serene location that offers breathtaking views of the Washington Monument, making it a hidden treasure in the heart of the city. The area boasts several enchanting willow trees and a stunning pond, which is particularly striking during the fall season. As it’s in close proximity to the Lincoln Memorial, it can be conveniently added to your session there, and you can also visit the DC War Memorial nearby.
Please note that a permit for still photography is mandatory for all National Mall locations, including the Constitution Gardens. The National Park Service charges $50 for the permit, along with a $90 filing fee, totaling $140. Nevertheless, applying for the permit is a hassle-free process, and I can guide you through it.
For good reason, the Lincoln Memorial is an iconic destination that offers stunning marble columns and magnificent views of the entire monument. Additionally, it provides a picturesque scene of the reflecting pool with the Washington Monument in the backdrop, and is conveniently situated within walking distance of two other top spots – the DC War Memorial and Constitution Gardens.
To avoid the tourists and crowds, it is recommended to visit this location at sunrise, as it provides the best lighting and an incredible view of the sun rising behind the Washington Monument and illuminating the reflecting pool. Moreover, finding a parking spot is relatively easy at this time of day, which is a significant advantage in the city.

If you’re looking to take indoor photos, the National Portrait Gallery is an excellent choice. Its stunning atrium is awash with natural light, while the garden provides a delightful touch of greenery. Additionally, we could snap some shots upstairs in one of the hallways.
I like to keep track of any changing policies directly from the National Portrait Gallery’s Website. At the time I wrote this post there is no fee to take photos in some common areas of the museum.
Washington DC’s Tidal Basin is a must-see picturesque attraction. This area is very beautiful all year around, but it is most popular during the Cherry Blossom Festival every year in late March to Early April. The Tidal Basin also provides stunning views of the Jefferson Memorial and Washington Monument all year around. As is the case with most DC locations I strongly suggest that my couples plan for a sunrise session for the best light and lightest crowds.

Capitol Hill is a sought-after destination for several reasons! You can pose for pictures with the magnificent marble columns of the Supreme Court or the fountains at the Library of Congress. Just a few steps away is the Capitol building, and you can capture some relaxed, spontaneous shots in the adjacent residential neighborhood. This location truly has something for everyone!
As with most places in Washington DC, I suggest visiting Capitol Hill at sunrise to avoid the crowds and to take advantage of the stunning way the light rises behind the Supreme Court. However, sunset is also a great time to visit.

The Library of Congress is a beautiful and historic building that attracts many visitors each year. While photography is generally allowed inside the Library of Congress, there are some rules and guidelines that you should be aware of before taking photos.
When taking photos inside the Library of Congress, be respectful of other visitors and library staff. We are restricted to common areas only, and must avoid using flash or tripods, which may disturb others or damage the historic artifacts on display.
There is no fee to take photography within the Library of Congress. But you will need to obtain entrance tickets for a timed entry.
Nestled among trees close to the Lincoln Memorial lies the DC War Memorial. A hidden gem that provides quintessential DC views with much less hustle and bustle compared to other spots. With elegant marble columns and lush greenery, it makes for an idyllic setting for couples and families. Some prefer to begin their photography session at the Lincoln Memorial and then take a leisurely stroll to the DC War Memorial for additional pictures.
