Some wedding days are beautiful because of the design. Others are beautiful because of the setting. And then there are days like Sara and Franco’s, where the beauty comes from the people, the history, and the love that fills every corner of the day.
From the very beginning, this wedding felt strong. Strong in commitment. Stronger in family. Strongest in the kind of love that is built over time and rooted deeply in connection.
Sara and Franco chose a classic black tie celebration at Gordon Springs in Purcellville, Virginia, and everything about the day reflected who they are. Timeless, intentional, and centered around the people who matter most to them.
A Slow, Intentional Wedding Day Focused on Family
The overall feeling of the day was emotional in the very best way. Nothing felt rushed. Nothing felt performative. Instead, the day unfolded slowly and intentionally, allowing space for meaningful moments, deep breaths, and connection.
What stood out most was how naturally Sara and Franco balanced time together with time spent with their guests. They were fully present with one another, while also making every person in the room feel seen and valued. It truly felt like a merging of families, not just a wedding celebration.
When I learned the wedding would be black tie, it immediately made sense. Not because it was trendy, but because it fit them. This was not a day built around what was popular at the moment. It was built around tradition, elegance, and honoring where they come from.
A Ceremony Rooted in Tradition and Emotion
Sara and Franco chose to wait until the ceremony to see each other, and that decision set the tone for one of the most emotional ceremonies I have witnessed.
The ceremony took place on the patio at Gordon Springs, with sweeping mountain views creating a peaceful, elevated backdrop. It was officiated by Franco’s uncle, making the moment even more personal. Both mothers carried the rings, a powerful and symbolic gesture that reflected the blending of two families into one.
There were tears everywhere. From parents to grandparents to guests, emotion flowed freely. But the most unforgettable moment came when Franco read his vows.
As he spoke, he referenced the love between his parents, honoring his father who has passed, and shared memories that connected his past with the future he is building with Sara. There truly was not a dry eye in the crowd.
One of my favorite candid moments of the entire day happened just before Sara walked down the aisle. Franco’s baby nephew made his way down in a tiny police car, a perfect nod to Franco’s career as a federal police officer. It was heartfelt, joyful, and completely them.
And then Sara appeared.
The way Franco looked at his bride stopped me in my tracks. There was so much love, reverence, and emotion written across his face that it brought me to tears behind the camera. It was unmistakable. This was a man who adored his partner with his whole heart.
Timeless Details and Meaningful Heirlooms
The design of the day was classic black and white, with romantic, timeless styling throughout. Soft white florals filled the space and elevated the clean elegance of the venue without overpowering it.
Some of the most meaningful details were the ones tied to family history. Franco wore his father’s wedding band. Sara’s bouquet was wrapped with lace from her grandmother’s wedding dress, and three of the buttons on her gown were also taken from that same dress. There were personal letters on display at the reception and charms honoring Franco’s father, quietly woven into the celebration.
Sara’s look was timeless and understated. A cathedral veil paired with a simple, elegant gown accented by the smallest embellishments. Franco wore a full black tuxedo with a dramatic bow tie and polished dress shoes, effortlessly classic.
Once the formalities concluded and the dance floor opened, they both changed into custom Air Force Ones, signaling the shift from elegant ceremony to full celebration.
A Celebration Long Awaited
Once the reception began, the energy completely shifted. The anticipation for this marriage had been building for a long time, and when it was time to celebrate, everyone felt it.
The dance floor was packed. Conversations flowed easily. Guests mingled, laughed, and celebrated in every corner of the space. It was equal parts joyful chaos and heartfelt connection.
Just before entering the reception, we stepped outside for sunset portraits, and the light was everything. Soft, glowing, and perfectly timed. It felt like the day pausing for one last breath before the celebration continued.
The night ended with Sara and Franco running through a tunnel of sparklers, surrounded by the people who love them most. That image, glowing and full of movement, feels like the perfect representation of their day.
Photographing a Wedding That Felt Like Family
Photographing Sara and Franco’s wedding was especially meaningful for me. They are the second couple in a close friend group I have had the honor of documenting, with a third wedding coming next fall. Walking into this day felt like stepping back into family.
From a photography perspective, my focus was on capturing the timeless beauty of the day while also preserving the in-between moments. The quiet glances. The tears. The laughter. The emotions that often pass too quickly to notice in real time.
My hope is that when Sara and Franco look back on these images years from now, they are instantly transported back to the high of this day. Not just how it looked, but how it felt.
