Choosing outfits for family photos can feel like the hardest part of preparing for your session. You want everyone to coordinate without looking overly matched, feel comfortable enough to move and play, and choose colors that photograph beautifully in the location.
For this year’s Richmond Golden Hour Mini Sessions, I created four outfit palettes specifically for the soft greenery, warm sunlight, and natural colors we’ll have around us.
Every individual piece linked below is under $100, and most are available from the same retailer to make shopping as simple as possible.
Soft, earthy colors are particularly beautiful during golden hour. Consider shades such as:
Instead of putting everyone in the same color, choose two or three coordinating colors and distribute them throughout the family’s outfits.
For example, Mom might wear a soft blue dress, Dad could wear a cream shirt with navy pants, and the children could wear a combination of cream, pale blue, and khaki.

This soft garden-inspired palette feels romantic, timeless, and completely at home against Richmond’s late-summer greenery.
The combination of sage, pale blue, and dusty pink provides variety while the warm neutral base keeps everyone looking connected.

Blue is always a beautiful choice for family portraits. Powder blue brings softness to the palette, while navy adds enough contrast to keep the photographs visually interesting.
The light-blue dress is a lovely color match for this palette, although reviews of the fabric are mixed. If possible, try it on before your session or use it as color inspiration when shopping.

Blush and mauve bring a little warmth and romance to family photographs. Pairing them with olive, cream, and brown keeps the overall look grounded and prevents it from feeling overly pink.
This palette is especially pretty for families who want a little color while maintaining a soft, natural look.

Warm neutrals and muted terracotta transition beautifully from summer into early fall. Navy adds a classic touch and gives the lighter colors a little definition.
This is a wonderful option for families who want their portraits to feel warm, relaxed, and slightly autumnal without using traditional fall colors.
Your family’s outfits do not need to match perfectly. In fact, photographs tend to feel more natural when everyone is wearing something slightly different.
Begin with one anchor outfit—usually the most patterned or distinctive piece—and build the rest of the family’s clothing around it.
Try to include:
Avoid large logos, neon colors, very small high-contrast patterns, and having everyone wear identical shirts.
These sessions are relaxed, playful, and thoughtfully guided. There will be walking, snuggling, movement, and plenty of interaction between family members.
Flowing dresses and skirts photograph beautifully because they introduce movement. Linen shirts, knit polos, chinos, and soft cotton pieces help everyone look polished without appearing overly formal.
Most importantly, choose clothing that feels like an elevated version of your family. Children who are comfortable can play, connect, and show their real personalities—and those are often the photographs families love most.
The Richmond Golden Hour Mini Sessions will take place on September 5 and are designed to capture connected family portraits, playful moments, and individual images in beautiful evening light.
Each session is 15 minutes, making it easy to update your family photographs without planning a full-length portrait experience.
