Winter maternity sessions can be incredibly beautiful, even without snow. Virginia winters tend to be soft and neutral, which makes wardrobe choices especially important. With the right fabrics, layers, and colors, your photos can feel cozy, timeless, and elevated without ever feeling cold.
Here is how I typically guide clients when planning what to wear for a winter maternity session.
When the landscape is quiet, texture does the heavy lifting. Winter is the perfect season for fabrics that add depth and softness to your images.
Velvet dresses are one of my top recommendations. They photograph beautifully, feel elevated, and naturally keep you warmer than lightweight materials. Long sleeve velvet dresses in winter tones or soft neutrals work especially well for maternity sessions.
Knit or ribbed dresses are another great option, particularly if you want something comfortable and relaxed while still feeling polished.
Layering is key to staying warm, but it should feel intentional.
A blanket scarf wrapped around your shoulders is both practical and beautiful. It adds softness, movement, and warmth without hiding your bump. You can wear it for cozy portraits and remove it briefly once you are warmed up.
Structured wrap coats, long cardigans, or knit shawls also work well in winter. I typically suggest avoiding bulky outerwear so your silhouette stays soft and flattering.

Accessories can add warmth and personality without pulling focus.
Beanie caps can be a really cute option for more casual winter maternity sessions. Simple knits in neutral tones photograph best and pair well with outdoor locations or in-home sessions.
Comfortable footwear is also important, especially outdoors. Closed-toe shoes or boots that feel secure and warm will keep you relaxed and confident during your session.
Virginia winters rarely come with bright white snow. Instead, we work with muted browns, soft grays, evergreens, and neutral skies.
Colors that photograph beautifully in these settings include cream, ivory, camel, warm browns, deep green, navy, muted blue, and soft blush. These tones stand out gently against winter backdrops without overpowering the image.
Outdoor winter maternity sessions work best when we embrace the season instead of fighting it.
I suggest choosing a long sleeve dress in a heavier fabric, paired with a scarf or wrap for warmth. We plan sessions with intention, using shorter outdoor windows and warm-up breaks as needed. Movement helps, and comfort always comes first.
With the right layers, outdoor winter sessions can feel cozy, connected, and effortless.

Studio maternity sessions are a wonderful winter option if you want a clean, timeless look without worrying about the weather.
Because studios are warm and controlled, you can lean into softer fabrics and lighter layers. Long sleeve dresses, fitted knits, and neutral tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on you and your growing belly.
Studio sessions feel calm, comfortable, and refined, especially in winter.

There is no reason to be uncomfortable during a winter maternity session. With thoughtful wardrobe choices and intentional planning, winter photos can feel warm, relaxed, and deeply personal.
If you are planning a winter maternity session in Virginia and want help choosing what to wear, I am always happy to guide you through the process.
Winter maternity sessions are not about braving the cold or waiting for the “perfect” season. They are about honoring this moment exactly as it is. With the right fabrics, thoughtful layering, and colors that complement Virginia’s winter landscape, your session can feel cozy, natural, and beautifully timeless. Whether we are outdoors, in a studio, or in the comfort of your own home, the goal is always the same: to create images that feel like you and reflect this season of becoming a parent.
