Every year, my Bon Air Rose Garden minis become a little more special to me. They’ve grown into some of my most popular mini sessions, and this August afternoon reminded me why.
There were roses, happy pups, and children with plenty of curiosity. As the afternoon continued, sunlight began spilling through the trees. But my favorite part was seeing so many familiar faces.
Most of the families who joined me were returning clients. Getting to photograph them again made an already beautiful afternoon feel personal.
Together, we created another small chapter of family memories at Bon Air Rose Garden in Arlington, Virginia.
The afternoon began with the Pulliam family and a little garden exploration.
Their photographs move between the rose beds and the grass, with three children bringing their own energy to each frame. In one image, Mom bends down beside the flowers. In another, the roses are sharp in the foreground while the family softens behind them.
I love including photographs like that. They help tell the story of where we were, alongside the portraits of everyone together.
Then the children settle onto the grass for sibling photographs. Their suspenders, soft colors, and floral dress look lovely against the orange roses. Yet it’s their expressions that make those frames worth keeping.
It was a sweet way to begin: a little exploring, a little sitting together, and room for everyone’s personality.

Next came the Fuerst family, including two very photogenic pups.
One of my favorite photographs places the children between the dogs on the grass. There is so much personality in that single frame. The pups certainly made sure they had a place in the afternoon’s story.
Meanwhile, a pale blue dress and bright roses brought a lovely softness to the individual portraits.
The family photographs also included a walk through the garden and close moments with Mom. In one, she leans in for a kiss while holding the children near.
Those smaller interactions matter just as much to me as the photograph of everyone looking at the camera. Together, they give a fuller picture of this season of family life.
The Gorr family’s session brought another kind of connection to the collection.
Alongside their full-family portraits, there is a wonderful sibling hug. A little brother wraps his arms around his sister, and her smile says plenty.
Later, the garden bench gives the family a place to sit close together. The wooden posts and greenery frame them, while the arbor adds depth to the wider photographs.
I love the variety within this small part of the garden. We can move from colorful rose beds to the quieter lines of the bench and archway. As a result, each gallery has different settings while still feeling connected.
More than anything, though, these photographs are about the people within those frames.

By the Walsh session, the sunlight became a more visible part of the photographs.
Rays stretch through the trees above the couple. Below them, pale roses surround a rust-colored dress and a soft blue shirt. The warm light gives these maternity portraits such a gentle feeling.
There are wide views of the two together, followed by a close photograph of their hands resting around her belly.
Then we move beneath the arbor for a quieter moment on the bench. They lean toward one another, with the garden still visible beyond them.
This part of the afternoon is such a lovely reminder that mini sessions can celebrate different chapters. Sometimes that means children and dogs gathered on the grass. Other times, it means making space for the anticipation of someone new.
The Duvall family closed the afternoon with two little boys, their dog, and that beautiful late-day glow.
Sunlight catches the edges of hair and stretches long shadows across the grass. The family gathers close, with their fluffy companion right in the middle.
Of course, the boys have moments of their own, too.
There are hands resting on the dog’s fur and a sweet photograph of the brothers leaning together. Those small gestures give the final images so much warmth.
Looking through the afternoon in order, I love seeing how the light changes. The roses remain a thread throughout, while each family brings a different feeling to the garden.

Bon Air Rose Garden minis have become a favorite on my calendar for more than the setting.
I get to welcome families back. I get to photograph another stage of childhood and preserve the little connections that are easy to overlook.
The roses and golden light make a beautiful frame for all of that.
To everyone who joined me in August, thank you. Whether we have worked together before or this was our first session, I’m grateful you chose to spend this time with me.
And to the pups: thank you for sharing the spotlight. Mostly.
If you’ve been hoping for family photographs among the roses, I would love to have you join me.
